INTI International University Celebrates New Chancellor Inauguration at July 2025 Convocation
On July 21, 2025, the Tan Yew Sing Multi-Purpose Hall in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, witnessed a historic ceremony as Yang Amat Mulia Tunku Dato’ Seri Utama Naquiyuddin ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar officially assumed his role as Chancellor of INTI International University. The inauguration took place during the university’s convocation ceremony, bringing together leaders from the higher education sector, members of INTI’s Board of Governors, university faculty and staff, industry guests, graduates, and their families.
A Distinguished Leader Steps Into Academic Leadership
The new Chancellor brings an impressive background rooted in public service and diplomacy. Moreover, Tunku Naquiyuddin serves as the Tunku Laxamana of Negeri Sembilan and is the eldest son of the late Tuanku Ja’afar ibni Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman, who was the tenth Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan.
His educational journey began locally and extended internationally, culminating in a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Economics from the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. Subsequently, he embarked on a career in the Malaysian diplomatic service, including postings at the Malaysian Embassy in France.
Commitment to Educational Excellence
Tunku Naquiyuddin’s dedication to education spans decades. He served as the Regent of Negeri Sembilan from 1994 to 1999 and has held various leadership roles in corporate and educational institutions. Furthermore, as Chairman of the Tuanku Ja’afar Educational Trust and Founder of Yayasan Tunku Naquiyuddin, he has consistently championed causes that support underprivileged students in their academic pursuits.
Vision for Transformative Education
In his inaugural address, the Chancellor articulated his philosophy on higher education’s transformative power.
“To be invited to serve as Chancellor of INTI International University is an honour I accept with deep respect. Education has always been close to my heart, not only for the way it expands minds, but also for the way it transforms lives,”
he declared.
He particularly praised INTI’s approach, noting:
“Through global partnerships, industry engagement, and genuine care for its students, INTI is shaping graduates who are prepared to meet the world—and improve it.”
Strategic Leadership Appointments
During the ceremony, the Chancellor announced two significant appointments that will strengthen the university’s academic leadership. The newly appointed Pro-Chancellors are:
- YBhg. Emeritus Professor Dato’ Ir. Dr. Mohamad Zawawi Ismail – A long-serving member of INTI’s Board of Directors and respected academic with extensive experience in Malaysia’s higher education sector
- YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Chua Hock Hoo – Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of Cheng & Co Group, known for advocating the connection between academic learning and real-world industry practices
Celebrating Academic Achievement
The convocation ceremony seamlessly transitioned from the inauguration to celebrating the Class of 2025’s accomplishments. The event featured the presentation of doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s, and diploma certificates, alongside industry-sponsored awards recognizing outstanding academic and leadership achievements.
YBhg. Dato’ Professor Dr. Azlinda Azman, Director-General of the Ministry of Higher Education, witnessed the proceedings alongside other distinguished guests including Emeritus Professor Dr. Lim Ho Peng and Professor Dr. Joseph Lee, the Vice-Chancellor of INTI International University.
Inspiring Words for Future Leaders
The Chancellor’s graduation speech resonated with themes of responsibility and global citizenship. He challenged the graduates:
“You graduate into a world of both complexity and possibility. INTI has prepared you to think across disciplines, collaborate across cultures, and lead with conscience.”
His message emphasized continuous learning and ethical leadership: “Carry forward what you’ve learned—and how you’ve learned. Stay open to new ideas, take responsibility, and remember that leadership often begins with listening.”
The ceremony concluded with a valedictory speech by Shavinah A/P K. Mohan, Valedictorian of the Class of 2025 and a graduate of the B.Sc. (Hons) in Physiotherapy programme, representing her fellow graduates as they embark on their professional journeys.
A New Chapter in Academic Excellence
This dual celebration represents more than ceremonial tradition—it symbolizes INTI International University’s commitment to evolving leadership and educational innovation. The inauguration of a Chancellor with deep roots in public service and educational philanthropy, combined with the graduation of students prepared for global challenges, positions the institution for continued growth in Malaysia’s competitive higher education landscape.
As INTI moves forward under new leadership, the university continues to demonstrate its dedication to producing graduates who are not merely academically qualified but also equipped to contribute meaningfully to society. For prospective students considering their educational options, events like these showcase the significance of convocation ceremonies in academic life.
The success of institutions like INTI reflects broader trends in Malaysian higher education development, where universities increasingly emphasize global partnerships and industry engagement to prepare students for contemporary challenges.
