The Student Affairs and Alumni Division organized the Grand Alumni Homecoming 2025: Golden Threads of Yesterday at the Royale Chulan Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Over 300 alumni from across the country attended the nostalgic reunion celebration.
The centerpiece announcement was the Special Waqf Knowledge Project: UM Alumni Education and Welfare Home, which will be constructed in Kampung Tok Jembal near the UMT campus at an estimated cost of RM500,000. The facility will provide transit accommodation for underprivileged students, unemployed young alumni, and temporary staff.
The event also featured a Letter of Intent exchange between HEPA and UMT SEA Sdn. Bhd., creating opportunities for alumni to access specialized training courses with registration discounts. Additionally, the university pre-launched its alumni magazine ‘SAUH’ as an official communication platform.
Quotes & Reactions
UMT Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamri Ibrahim said the establishment of the home symbolizes the alumni’s love for the university and their support for higher education sustainability.
“The home will be built in Kampung Tok Jembal, near the UMT campus, at an estimated cost of RM500,000,” he said. “It aims to support underprivileged students (asnaf and B40), unemployed young alumni, and temporary staff who need transit accommodation.”
“This effort not only expresses appreciation for our alumni but also nurtures compassion and social responsibility towards inclusive and sustainable education,” he added.
Background & Context
The initiative forms part of the Alumni Welfare Fund, established two years ago, which has benefited over 130 alumni through medical treatment assistance, bereavement support, tuition fee aid, and property loss compensation.
Prof. Zamri mentioned another initiative called Alumni Kasih, introduced by UMT in 2025 through HEPA, which offers one-time financial aid to alumni’s children pursuing studies at the university.
The Vice-Chancellor also shared that UMT achieved its first ranking among the world’s top 801-850 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2026, with particular strength in Marine and Freshwater Biology, where it ranks 20th in Asia and among the top 100 globally.
Distinguished guests included UMT Pro-Chancellor Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Mohd Zuki Ali, Board Chairman Prof. Dr. Mohamad Salmi Sohod, and Deputy Vice-Chancellors.
