Celebrating 60 Years of Excellence at the University of Newcastle in Australia

Have you ever witnessed a celebration that perfectly captures the intersection of academic excellence, international diplomacy, and national pride? Such was the atmosphere when the University of Newcastle recently marked its 60th anniversary with an extraordinary reception in Singapore—an evening that celebrated not one, but three remarkable Diamond Jubilees.

University of Newcastle Celebrates 60 Years of Academic Excellence with Singapore Reception

The University of Newcastle marked a momentous occasion with a reception held in Singapore to celebrate its 60th anniversary. More than just a university milestone, the evening also commemorated two other significant events: 60 years of diplomatic ties between Singapore and Australia, and Singapore’s 60th year of independence.

Graciously hosted at the Australian High Commission, the reception brought together close to 90 alumni, distinguished guests, board members, staff, and friends of the University to honour the pioneers who paved the way, and reaffirm their commitment to the values of education, integrity, and progress that will continue to guide them into the future.

Distinguished Guests Mark Historic Partnerships

The evening began with a warm welcome by event host Jamie, who set the tone for a night of celebration, gratitude, and shared history. His Excellency Allaster Cox, Australian High Commissioner to Singapore, then delivered opening remarks, highlighting the strong partnership between Singapore and Australia, and the role of education in deepening ties between the two nations.

Meanwhile, the presence of such high-profile diplomatic figures underscored the significant role that international education partnerships play in strengthening bilateral relationships between nations.

The Ceremonial Presentation of the University Mace

A highlight of the evening was the ceremonial presentation of the University mace—a symbol of UON’s authority, history, and enduring values. The Honourable Patricia Forsythe, Chancellor of the University of Newcastle, spoke about the significance of the mace before officially presenting it to Professor Abhishek Bhati, Pro Vice-Chancellor and CEO of Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education, alongside Newcastle Australia Board Members and His Excellency Allaster Cox.

As a result, the presentation was followed by a celebratory toast, led by Chancellor Forsythe, honouring UON’s 60th anniversary, 60 years of Singapore–Australia diplomatic relations, and Singapore’s Diamond Jubilee.

Recognising Outstanding Academic Achievement

The evening also celebrated student achievement, with the prestigious University Medal awarded to Rahinni Thannimalai, a graduate of the Bachelor of Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (BEnvOHS) program. For context, the University Medal is conferred to fewer than one percent of graduates each year, recognising outstanding academic excellence.

The University Medal represents the pinnacle of academic achievement, awarded to fewer than one percent of graduates annually—making Rahinni Thannimalai’s recognition truly exceptional.

This recognition demonstrates the university’s commitment to maintaining rigorous academic standards across all its international campuses and programs.

Looking Forward: The Next Chapter of Excellence

In closing, Professor Abhishek Bhati reflected on the University’s journey in Singapore, expressing gratitude to alumni, staff, and partners who have been part of UON’s story. Furthermore, he reaffirmed the University’s commitment to education, innovation, and service for the decades ahead.

The reception was not only a tribute to UON’s rich history but also a celebration of community, resilience, and enduring partnerships—values that will continue to define the University of Newcastle in its next 60 years and beyond.
