ICCPA 2025: Advancing Curriculum, Pedagogy, and Assessment For Sustainable Future

The Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE) at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) officially launched the second International Conference on Curriculum, Pedagogy, and Assessment (ICCPA) on 10th June 2025 at Chancellor Hall, UBD. This landmark event marked a significant milestone in educational discourse across Southeast Asia and beyond.

A Global Educational Gathering

Co-hosted by Prince of Songkla University, Thailand, the conference attracted educators and researchers from more than 11 nations worldwide. Meanwhile, over 100 authors contributed to over 70 papers that were presented throughout the event. As a result, participants engaged with diverse perspectives spanning multiple educational contexts and cultural frameworks.

The conference took place as part of the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition (MYCE) 2025, coinciding with UBD’s 40th anniversary celebrations. This strategic timing enhanced the significance of the gathering, creating synergies between institutional heritage and forward-looking educational initiatives.

Key Thematic Areas and Research Focus

The presentations covered a comprehensive range of research and practice across several critical domains. These included pedagogical innovations, artificial intelligence in education, technology-enhanced learning, and future-ready curriculum development. Furthermore, assessment and evaluation, along with mental health and wellbeing, formed essential pillars of discussion that fostered rich dialogue and collaboration across disciplines.

Distinguished Leadership and Notable Launches

Dr Haji Azman Ahmad, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) from the Ministry of Education, graced the opening ceremony with his presence. During this ceremony, two significant academic journals published by SHBIE were officially launched: New Thinking in Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education (NewT), and Titih: Jurnal Pendidikan Sains Sosial, Kemanusiaan dan Kaunseling.

These publications represent SHBIE’s commitment to advancing scholarly discourse in educational research and innovation, providing platforms for cutting-edge research dissemination across multiple disciplines.

Keynote Presentations and Expert Workshops

Professor Cecilia K Y Chan from The University of Hong Kong delivered a compelling keynote titled ‘Future-Ready Education: Building AI-Savvy Students Across Disciplines.’ Additionally, she led the workshop ‘Ethics, Innovation and Integrity in AI-Resilient Assessments,’ addressing crucial concerns about maintaining academic integrity in an AI-dominated landscape.

Associate Professor Masitah Shahrill of SHBIE presented her keynote ‘From Reflective Practice to Future-Ready Teaching: Beginning Teachers’ Research Journeys.’ For example, her presentation spotlighted the transformative power of reflective action research in teacher education, demonstrating how novice educators can develop into reflective practitioners.

Digital Innovation in Education

Brandon Liau, recognised as one of the world’s only 50 Canva-verified experts, facilitated an engaging workshop titled ‘Level Up Your Lesson with Canva.’ This session provided practical strategies for educators to enhance lesson design using digital tools, reflecting the conference’s emphasis on technology-enhanced learning approaches.

Such workshops exemplify how modern educators can leverage digital design platforms for educational content creation, making learning more visually engaging and accessible for students across diverse learning contexts.

Building Tomorrow’s Educational Foundation

The two-day conference successfully reinforced ICCPA’s commitment to innovating education for a future-ready and sustainable world. By emphasising evidence-based curriculum design, pedagogy, and assessment aligned with global and local priorities, participants gained valuable insights into creating educational systems that respond to contemporary challenges while preparing students for an uncertain future.

ICCPA 2025 demonstrated that meaningful educational transformation occurs when international communities collaborate around shared values of innovation, sustainability, and excellence.
