KKU Engineering Faculty Collaborates with Skill Development Department to Launch National Skill Standard Testing Initiative for Thailand’s Robotics Sector

Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Engineering partnered with Thailand’s Department of Skill Development to launch a national skill standard testing pilot project for mobile robot developers on July 29, 2025. The initiative aims to establish Thailand as a regional robotics leader by creating the country’s first national-level robotics testing center.

Thailand Launches National Robotics Testing Center Pilot Project

Key Details

The Bachelor of Engineering Program in Automation Robotics and Intelligent System Engineering at Khon Kaen University collaborated with the Department of Skill Development, Ministry of Labour, to implement the “Pilot Project on National Skill Standard Testing for the Occupation in Automation and Robotics: Mobile Robot Developer.”

The project addresses growing industrial demand for standardized, safe, and high-performing robots by establishing domestic testing capabilities. Currently, Thai companies must send robots abroad for certification, resulting in increased costs and extended timeframes.

An in-country testing center will reduce certification expenses and accelerate robotics technology development to meet international standards, according to project organizers.

Quotes & Reactions

Assoc. Prof. Ratchaphon Suntivarakorn, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, said the Department of Skill Development’s recognition of the faculty’s potential as a national skill standard testing center was “truly an honor.”

“The establishment of this robotics testing center serves as a vital mechanism to promote Thailand’s robotics industry toward becoming a regional leader, reinforcing credibility for developers and entrepreneurs, and meeting industrial demands for robots with the highest standards of safety and efficiency,” Suntivarakorn stated during the opening ceremony.

Assoc. Prof. Thana Radpukdee, Chairperson of the Program Administrative Committee, explained that the project responds to industrial sector demands for standardized robotics solutions.

“It will also accelerate the development of robotics technology to meet international standards and enhance global competitiveness. Furthermore, this initiative reinforces the reputation of the Faculty of Engineering, Khon Kaen University, as a hub for robotics innovation,” Radpukdee said.

Background & Context

The pilot project represents Thailand’s effort to strengthen its technology-based economy and position the country as a regional robotics hub. The collaboration between academic institutions and government agencies reflects Thailand’s broader strategy to develop domestic capabilities in automation and robotics standards.

Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Engineering has been recognized for its advanced knowledge and qualified personnel in robotics and automation technologies. The partnership will enhance the institution’s reputation as a leading academic center for technological innovation.

What’s Next

The pilot project will serve as a foundation for establishing a permanent national robotics testing center. Success of the initiative could lead to expanded testing capabilities and additional partnerships between educational institutions and government agencies.

The project aims to enhance Thailand’s global competitiveness in robotics while providing domestic certification services for mobile robot developers and manufacturers.
