Have you ever wondered how universities bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world community challenges? At Sriwijaya University, the answer lies in their comprehensive Thematic Real Work Lecture program, where students step beyond classroom walls to make tangible impacts in local communities.
LPPM Unsri Conducts 102nd Thematic KKN Briefing for Community Service Initiative
LPPM Sriwijaya University (UNSRI) recently orchestrated the 102nd Thematic Real Work Lecture (KKN-T) briefing, marking another milestone in their commitment to community-centered education. Dr. Dr. Radiyati Umi Partan, SpPD-KR, M.Kes. led the proceedings at the Faculty of Economics Hall on the Indralaya Campus this past Monday, June 30th, 2025.
Understanding the Thematic KKN Framework
The thematic KKN represents more than just an academic requirement—it’s a structured community service program where students channel their efforts toward specific activities that align with both community needs and regional development objectives. As a result, these initiatives directly support the broader Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework, creating meaningful connections between university resources and societal progress.
Impressive Scale of Participation
This year’s program demonstrates remarkable scope and coordination. Meanwhile, 288 dedicated KKN participants, supported by 20 field assistant lecturers (DPL), are scheduled to depart on July 1st, 2025, for their assignments across 22 villages in Pagar Alam City, South Sumatra Province.
The diverse academic representation includes students from six key faculties: Economics, Social Sciences and Political Sciences, Teacher Training and Education, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Agriculture, and Medicine. This interdisciplinary approach ensures comprehensive community support across various sectors.
Leadership Guidance and Expectations
Deputy Rector III delivered compelling advice during the briefing, emphasizing active participation over mere attendance. “My message to these younger siblings is one opportunity. So I beg for younger siblings to participate well, not just to be present, but at the same time study there,” he explained. Furthermore, he encouraged students to engage authentically with community life, understand real-world problems, and collaborate with supervisors to develop practical solutions.
“Like what life is in the community, then how real problems in the field, come there, in the existing problems, if possible together with the supervisor, make a real solution.”
Institutional Support and Regional Collaboration
LPPM Secretary Prof. Ir. Siti Nurmaini, M.T., P.HD. highlighted the institution’s commitment to facilitating comprehensive KKN activities while adhering to established policies. The university’s research and community service framework ensures structured support for all participants throughout their field assignments.
Municipal Leadership Endorsement
Mayor of Pagar Alam Ludi Oliansyah provided substantial backing for the initiative, presenting material titled “The Embodiment of Thematic Community Service Program for Development that had an impact and sustainable towards a prosperous society in the City of Pagar Alam.” His enthusiasm was evident as he welcomed the student participants and encouraged meaningful community integration.
For example, the Mayor’s specific guidance emphasized authentic engagement: “I welcome the students participating in the thematic KKN in Pagaralam, my message mingle with the people there and give the best contributions, and take good things during this Thematic KKN activity.”
Comprehensive Preparation Through Expert Sessions
The briefing featured additional expert presentations to ensure thorough preparation. Dr. Muhakka, S.Pt, M.Sc. delivered essential material on “General Introduction and Technical Thematic KKN 102,” while Dr. Rizky Tirta Adhiguna, S.TP, M.Sc. focused on “The Orientation of the Thematic KKN Program 102 and Output.”
These sessions equipped participants with practical knowledge and clear expectations for their upcoming community service assignments. The comprehensive approach reflects the United Nations’ emphasis on community-based sustainable development initiatives.
Looking Ahead: Impact and Sustainability
As these 288 students prepare for their July departure, the 102nd Thematic KKN represents more than academic fulfillment—it embodies genuine partnership between higher education and community development. The program’s focus on sustainable impact ensures that student contributions extend far beyond their physical presence in these 22 villages.
This initiative demonstrates how universities can serve as catalysts for positive change while providing students invaluable real-world experience. As you consider the role of education in community development, remember that programs like Unsri’s Thematic KKN prove that meaningful learning happens when academic knowledge meets community needs head-on.
